"The Naval Achievements of Great Britain"
is justifiably the most famous series of English naval prints produced. This
famous work prepared with commentary by James Jenkins features colored prints of
naval engagement between 1793 to 1817. The fifty-five prints prepared in London
before 1817 are hand colored and expertly engraved by Messrs. T. Sutherland,
Bailey and Jeakes. All have original intact plate marks (impression
surrounding the image where engraving plate meets paper).
The series illustrates the naval combat of
man-of-war ships between Great Britain and foreign countries including France,
Spain, Denmark and the United States. Many of the prints feature the epic naval
struggle of the Napoleonic War. As stated in the inscription of the folio
there were 145 original subscribers. The production of the folio in 1816
emanates from the patronage of the Earl of St. Vincent.
Each rare print is a desirable decorative and
collectible print from the original series. A facsimile reproduction of
450 copies of the "Naval Achievements" was later printed in 1998.
These famous prints and naval conflicts were an inspiration to the author
Patrick O'Brien whose many sea-faring novels took place during this period.
A special reproduction series was issued in 1998
using the original prints from the Calvin Bullock Library. We also carry this
series of less expensive prints.
